My Story


As I neared the age of 46, I found myself unhappy with the way I looked and felt.  I was at my heaviest weight of 176 lbs and the extra weight I had been carrying around had drained my energy long enough. At this time I made the decision to do something about it. I knew I needed to start investing in my health, so I hired a personal trainer and began working out three days per week. 
When I began with a personal trainer I started walking twenty minutes a day and gradually increased my pace until I could run 3.1 miles at a time. Working with my personal trainer and being dedicated to my workouts gave me the strength and endurance to complete numerous 5Ks, half marathons and even a full marathon all by the age of 48!  

Paired with my workouts I also made healthier food choices. Keeping a food journal helped me realize how many calories I was consuming daily. I took the necessary steps to cut out the fast food in my diet and began reading nutrition labels. By adjusting my eating habits, I was able to fully embrace my passion and it resulted in a major lifestyle change.

Upon completion of my marathon, I really wanted to challenge myself by building my strength. I enrolled in a “Rugged Maniac” which is a 3.1 Mile course filled with all sorts of obstacles. Although the obstacle course was difficult it was more importantly an enjoyable experience, I cannot stress enough how important the fun factor is in any aspect of working out.

My next venture focused primarily on strength training. I went forward in my journey by entering a powerlifting competition, which consisted of squats, benching and deadlifts. I was nervous about competing, but I persevered and overcame my anxiousness. Because of this I now hold the state record for my age group!

My experiences are only a few examples that show you what you can achieve if you dedicate yourself and put your mind to it. If you continuously set your goals above the bar, then there is always something to reach for.

So it’s been 23 months since I began this journey and I am down 92lbs. I was feeling great! Then 9 months ago I was diagnosed with Polymyositis - a rare muscle disease with unknown cause. I was fortunate to be diagnosed relatively quickly and was put on 70 mg Prednisone along with an immunosuppressant. I am now down to 5mg of Prednisone and still on the immunosuppressant. My trainer Chris has been a HUGE part of my journey and with her help I am not only building strength/muscle I am building courage 👍  My new mantra.. ‘Progress not perfection’.

My goal was to be in the best possible shape for my sixty-fifth birthday. Last October I began my journey of exercise, weight training, and hopefully weight loss because I was serious about reaching this goal. I work with Chris Napolitano at Worth The Weight Fitness. After losing my mom in May of 2012 I gained comfort by going out to eat pretty much every night and doing close to no exercise. A year later I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and Graves’ disease. I had gained a total of 30 pounds in one year. After trying numerous medications for my thyroid and nothing working I made the decision to have surgery to remove my thyroid in January of 2015. which also got rid of my Graves’ disease. Not even a week after surgery I was already searching for gyms and a personal trainer to train with. I came across anytime fitness and went to sign up. Chris was the one who actually signed me up. At first she intimidated me because she seemed like she was pretty hard core. After our first session together I immediately felt like I connected with her but it still took some time for me to open up and gain the confidence I needed to be successful with my weight loss. I have lost a total of 20 pounds in 5 months! I feel great and stronger and confident then I have in a very long time. Chris not only helped me lose weight but more importantly she brought me back to life.
